News24, 29 October 2002, Aids-spend to rise by R3.3bn

Cape Town - Spending on the government's Aids-response policy will increase by about R3.3bn in the next three years, says Finance Minister Trevor Manuel.

This included targeted funding in the national budget and increased conditional grants to the provinces, as well as increased provincial spending funded through the equitable share, he said in his medium-term budget policy statement tabled in parliament on Tuesday.

"Additional funds will go towards the roll-out of the prevention of mother-to-child transmission, post-exposure prophylaxis, and further expansion of appropriate treatment regimes in line with the cabinet's statement of April 17.

He said: "A technical committee is reviewing options, costs and affordability to take forward the cabinet decision."

Among other things. priority would be given to equipping provincial health sectors with adequate medicines and drugs to implement the policy.
