Sunday Times, 24 November 2002, P Diddy Proves He's All Heart

R&B superstar P Diddy had barely touched down in South Africa before he was whisked off to meet local HIV/Aids victims for whose cause he was to perform last night.

The star, whose real name is Sean Combs, used to be known as Puff Daddy. He was in Cape Town to perform at the Staying Alive charity concert at Green Point Stadium last night.

Other international performers were to include Alicia Keys and Usher.

On Friday, Diddy sent young Khayelitsha residents into a frenzy when he made a surprise appearance at the area' s day clinic.

The award-winning performer gave away tickets to the concert, signed autographs and met Aids sufferers.

"It's an experience. I am proud of them and I have a lot of admiration for their courage and perseverance," he said.

The singer looked overwhelmed by the crowds eager for autographs and handshakes. It was Diddy's first visit to the continent.

"It's really beautiful. I've been waiting a long time to be here, and it feels good," he said.

Local acts Danny K, Mandoza, 101, Bianca le Grange and Ready D were due to join the star-studded line-up in the fight against Aids.

The concert will be broadcast on South African television on December 1 - World Aids Day - as well as worldwide on MTV.
