News24, 18 November 2002, Door-to-door Aids campaign

Johannesburg - The Gauteng government has started a two-week door-to-door Aids awareness campaign that is intended to kick-start a series of activities leading up to World Aids Day on Dec 1.

Gauteng MEC for Health Gwen Ramokgopa will officially launch the campaign on Tuesday at the Masakhane Clinic in Alexandra. The campaign is moulded on a similar, highly successful programme by UNAids in Barcelona last year.

Non-governmental organisations, in partnership with the government, have trained over 10 000 volunteers in Aids-related matters.

These volunteers will be visiting more than 850 homes to explain Aids issues to more than three million people.

According to a statement issued by the Gauteng Aids Council, door-to-door campaigns have proved highly effective in getting crucial information to people in disadvantaged areas. - Sapa
