News24, 03 December 2002, Fewer HIV infections

Cape Town - New research has shown that the HIV/Aids pandemic in South Africa might not be as extensive as previously thought.

Figures released recently put the HIV-positive population at an estimated 14.2%, or 6.5 million, in July this year.

However, recent studies show that it might be under the six million mark.

A brochure entitled "HIV/Aids profile in the provinces" is aimed at making statistics on the pandemic available to the government, businessmen and the public.

At present, indications are that while the number of HIV infections is on the decline, the Aids death toll will only peak in 2010.
